I would be remiss not to include the kitchen from An Urban Cottage because while Steve did a bit more work than simply adding decoration, he did not completely overhaul the kitchen, and the results are still pretty incredible.
Before
After
Here is what Steve did to the space:
- Painted walls, cabinets, and the tile (yes, he painted the tile)
- Installed inexpensive stock oak cabinets (which he painted) to either side of the stove with butcher block counter on the top
- Added shelves above the stove
- Purchased a vintage work table for an island
- Put up bamboo blinds on the windows
And speaking of kitchens, I realized that though it has been months and months since I painted our rental kitchen, I never have shown pictures of the hardware installed.
Before
After cabinets were painted.
After cabinets pulls were installed.
| Apologies for the grainy pictures -- the light was bad. |
The point of this post? You don't need a ton of cash, a contractor, and months of renovation to make your kitchen look better if you are unhappy with it. All it might need is a little decorating.
But, you know, I wouldn't mind a gorgeous Wolf range and hood, some subway tile, pretty pendants, an island...

Looks great, Camille! It's amazing what a little sprucing up can do--good job!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous...your kitchen with the new hardware, and the first one. I cannot tell you how refreshing and inspiring it is to see these kinds of makeovers. Love, love everything!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you posted a photo...I was wondering if getting the hardware installed was still in the column titled "Can't get to it because of the wild twins." And, of course, I always love to see photos from Steve's blog. Just figured out if I became a follower, I wouldn't have to type "An Urban Cottage" in several times a day to see if there was anything new. Aren't new bloggers pitiful?
ReplyDeleteOh, Camille, this really, really lovely. Your kitchen is a testament (as you said) to the effect of hard work, a little paint, and great decorative touches.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you've already addressed this, but what was your landlord's take on painting/renovations? I wish I could do the same in our apartment!
It's beautiful. Goes to show you how really a little paint goes a long way.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic Camille! Both you and Steve have done a wonderful job turning something ordinary into something beautiful. I really like the hardware you chose. Great job!

Camille,
ReplyDeleteThis turned out really great. The hardware makes a huge difference! What a transformation of contractor grade cabinets.
I notice the reflection of your feet in the mirror above the countertop. You should levitate when taking photos from that angle. It really works out well in situations.
Steve sent me over to visit and I'm glad he did! Your kitchen is great.
ReplyDeleteA great posting! One of the things that I think makes your renovation work so well is that you chose complementary dut different colors for the top and bottom cabinets. The natural instinct is to match both.
ReplyDeleteit is amazing what paint and hardwork can do to a place. both of your kitchens are just beautiful and amazing that they were done so inexpensively.

Camille, I love the finished result!!! The pulls and paint add so much in making it totally charming. All your hard work paid off big time
ReplyDeleteA little paint and hardware goes a long way. Great transformations!
ReplyDeleteI love both kitchens! You did a fabulous job. Just found you from An Urban Cottage and am now following you. Off to check out some older posts.

Came over from Steves~yes you both did amazing jobs on your penny pincher budgets! I did one too on my kitchen, and you can have a kitchen to love. I love the colors of your cabs~and Steves mirror over the sink.
ReplyDeleteYou've done a beautiful job giving your kitchen a face-lift -- I love it! And your styling is gorgeous. I would love to use a couple of your kitchen images in an upcoming post I am doing (with proper credit and a link, of course).

Love both of these kitchens-along with the major point about how just the right combo of color and decor can elevate an space.
ReplyDeleteWe are working on our kitchen right now-thanks for some more inspiration!

ReplyDeleteOh I love your kitchen! Now I just need to drum up the courage to ask my landlords to paint mine!
ReplyDeleteThey both look great. It's amazing what a litle paint and change of accesories can do, we did that to our kitchen when we sold our old house and it was an incredile transformation for very little money. BTW, once when I was buying a new cooktop and drooling over a six burner Viking that I could neither afford nor fit in my kitchen the appliance salesman said: "it doesn't matter how fancy or expensive it is, if you can't cook you still won't be able to; if you can cook a campfire will do."
ReplyDeleteSuch a fantastic job transforming your kitchen, Camille!! Your hardware is so beautiful...can you come do mine now? I'm not sure I have the time or patience to meticulously paint my cabinets as well as you have done. But now I know as you said that a little decorating is all it takes!
ReplyDeleteYou are sooo right when you say it doesn't have to cost a small fortune to make your kitchen someplace you want to spend time in. We started with a really bad kitchen, you know, dead bats in the vent hood. We did it all ourselves so we saved a boatload of $$$. You can take a look here if you'd like.

Thanks for sharing your kitchen and Steve's. Just goes to show you what paint and vision can do to a place!!
Just wonderful, I love seeing makeovers like this:)
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful, I love seeing makeovers like this:)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could rent my house for a year or so?
ReplyDeleteNo money necessary....just your eye.

It's beautiful! I follow Steve and now you!
ReplyDeleteMary
I wish every person on 'House Hunters' that says that 'everything has to be gutted' when they are perfectly good rooms could see how a little elbow grease and paint is, in most cases, all that is needed to make a room shine. If I see one more stainless steel and granite counter kitchen . . . how sheeplike.
ReplyDeleteLove a good makeover like this which we can all manage, Steve's kitchen looks amazing, HUGE improvement and you know I love yours too!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad i found you through Steve. I'll have to go follow. I have those exact same cabinets in my kitchen Change is coming to mine, hopefully by the summer, on zero money. Well, you know what I mean. Thanks for sharing your great makeover!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I love the transformation.
ReplyDeleteLove this! You've done an amazing job. We painted our cabinets and love them (reveal to come soon... ;) )
ReplyDeleteGoes to show you don't need 20,000 to have a stellar kitchen. I just love all the touches in both kitchens. Love your hardware. So glad you posted a picture of it all done! Very inspiring post Camille.
ReplyDeleteThis gives me the strength to keep going - I'm doing a kitchen reno on a shoestring budget myself. Yours is just stunning, Camille!
ReplyDeleteOH. MY. GOODNESS!! Love the before and afters! So inspiring.
ReplyDeleteWow, Camille. You have turned the kitchen into a beautiful, cozy gem. Your landlords must be loving you. Do you take the pulls with you when you leave? Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteCame over from An Urban Cottage...I love how the new hardware transformed your kitchen. Very inspirational. I'm all about simple cheap fixes that make all the difference. So glad I found you through Steve.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job!!! Looks so bright and airy it makes you actually want to cook!!!
ReplyDeleteHow inspiring, Camille! I'm loving every bit of it-- paint colors, mirror, pulls, etc. Kudos!

Wow, stunning results! I love it when people really work with what is in front of them. The results provide something that has more character and less 'builder kitchen' look. Love it!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing!! SO so gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Totally awesome. The decorating changes both you and Steve made are incredible and inspiring!
ReplyDeleteJust noticed you both have mirrors in the kitchen. I like this a lot.
ReplyDeleteYou guys have the magic touch!! Wow! Love it all, Camille!
ReplyDeleteThis post is just what I needed. I have seen Steve's re-done kitchen and your point is clearly made. A little decorating and some paint makes a HUGE difference!
ReplyDeleteWe just did a major renovation complete with your list of "wouldn't mind having" and are moving back to CT where we purchased a home built in 1900. The kitchen has been "re-done", but this post makes me realize I can decorate for a few years while we figure out what needs to be done long term. Must show this to my husband....he'll be so relieved!
You and Steve might be separated at birth.....you are both at the top of your class with accessorizing.....Your kitchen looks great Camille.
ReplyDeleteI have a Steve but not one that can do that!! Can we swap?!
ReplyDeleteKelly
Great inspiration on what can be done in a kitchen without spending a gazillion dollars.
ReplyDeleteYour newest follower, Mary Alice
Do you get tired of people telling you what a great job you did with this kitchen? I've got a similar job to do...but I don't have your floors. The after pictures make them totally disappear. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great transformation done by both you and Steve! My first visit. I'll be back!
ReplyDeleteHow so very practical dahhling! Very cute photos..
ReplyDeleteI love what you did :) those drawer pulls are amazing !!!
ReplyDeleteLove your finished product!!
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I was talking about in my previous comment... Kitchens for the rest of us. I believe that limitations force us to be more creative. You took to that task beautifully. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI've shared your kitchen in today's blog post on kitchen mirrors! Thank You!
